Multilingual SEO in the AI Overview Era: What Still Works
The zero-click statistics that terrify English-language publishers are an average — and averages hide the multilingual story. AI surfaces, citation competition and content saturation all vary sharply by language.
The asymmetry
English informational queries are the most AI-compressed surface on the web. The same query in Polish, Thai or Arabic often meets a classic results page — or an AI answer drawing from a citation pool thin enough that one good translated cluster dominates it.
Strategy implications
1) Weight informational content toward languages where it still earns clicks (and citations are winnable). 2) Keep English informational pages capsule-led for citation defense (GEO playbook). 3) Double down on commercial/local intent in every language — carts and calls survive every SERP redesign.
Measurement note
Track per-language CTR separately in Search Console; lumping locales hides exactly the divergence you should be exploiting. Per-language sitemaps make the segmentation trivial (how).
