WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong” Released: The AI Foundation Era Begins

WordPress 7.0 “Armstrong”, named for Louis Armstrong, shipped on May 20, 2026. The release lays the foundation for AI across the WordPress ecosystem: a provider-agnostic WP AI Client, the Abilities API, and Model Context Protocol support for AI-agent interaction, alongside a refreshed dashboard and collaboration tooling.

What changed under the hood

Armstrong is the most architecturally significant update since Gutenberg landed in 2018. The AI layer is deliberately provider-agnostic: plugins can call models through a common client rather than shipping their own integrations. Real-time co-editing groundwork raised infrastructure requirements (WebSocket-capable hosting for some features).

The multilingual question

Core still does not manage multilingual content — that remains Gutenberg Phase 4, with groundwork penciled in around WordPress 7.2 in December 2026. Even when Phase 4 lands, it will define data structures, not translation automation: connecting engines, costs and SEO will remain plugin territory for years.
