Selling to Japan: Why English-Only Sites Fail and What Works Instead
Japan is a top-five e-commerce market where English-only foreign sites convert dismally. The gap between “translated” and “localized for Japan” is wider here than in any Western market — and still very bridgeable.
Language and tone
Use polite form (です/ます) for commerce — machine output via DeepL with formality control lands close; have the homepage and checkout reviewed (MTPE is cheap relative to this market’s value). Setup: Japanese guide.
Design expectations
Japanese shoppers do not punish dense layouts: specifications, FAQs, badges and delivery detail build the confidence that drives conversion. Resist “cleaning up” — add information instead.
Practical search note
Script variants split queries (Japanese SEO): cover the dominant script per term, and let translated long-form content capture the tail. CJK meta titles carry more meaning per character — shorter is fine. Market data: Japan page.
