What is hreflang?

An HTML attribute that tells search engines which language and optional region a page targets, so users get the right language version in search results.

In more depth

hreflang annotations live in link tags, HTTP headers or XML sitemaps and must be reciprocal: every language version must reference all the others, including itself. Missing return links are the most common implementation error.

Why it matters for your website

Understanding hreflang helps you make better decisions when taking a WordPress site multilingual — from choosing URL structures and engines to controlling costs. Transxlate handles the mechanics (language URLs, lang attributes, caching, hreflang on Pro) so terms like this become settings, not engineering projects.
