The Complete hreflang Guide for WordPress (2026)
hreflang tells search engines which language and region each version of a page targets, so a French searcher gets your French page instead of the English one. It is the backbone of multilingual SEO — and the most commonly broken implementation on the international web.
The reciprocity rule
If your English page lists the German alternate, the German page must list the English one back — and both must self-reference. Miss one return link and engines may ignore the whole cluster. This is why hand-maintained hreflang decays: every new page multiplies the bookkeeping.
Regional targeting done right
Use plain language codes (de) for one version serving all speakers; add regions (de-AT) only when content genuinely differs — prices, offers, spelling. Invalid combinations like “en-EU” (EU is not a country) are silently dropped. Browse valid codes in our hreflang reference.
Auditing
Crawl your site quarterly and after migrations; check for non-reciprocal pairs, alternates pointing at redirects, and canonical tags fighting hreflang. In Search Console, wrong-country impressions are the symptom to watch.
The automated path
Transxlate Pro emits complete reciprocal clusters — with x-default — on every page of every language automatically. Setup: five minutes.
