Why BYO-API-Key Translation Is Eating Word Quotas
Translation plugins built their pricing when machine translation was scarce and hard to access. In 2026, MT is a commodity API any site owner can buy at ~$20 per million characters. Pricing models built on reselling that commodity are living on borrowed time.
The margin, exposed
A 50,000-word site in one language: ~$6 of Google API usage, once. The same volume inside typical quota plans: $100+ per year, recurring. The 15–30x spread isn’t value — it’s an access toll on an API the customer could hold directly.
Why now
Three converging forces: engines made keys self-serve and added generous free tiers; plugin architectures (front-end string tables) made wholesale keys plug-and-play for non-developers; and AI literacy taught site owners what API pricing looks like. The mystery premium evaporated.
What survives
Software value: visual editors, automatic hreflang, translator workflows, caching, support. That is honestly priceable as a license — which is exactly how we price. The words themselves return to where commodities belong: cost.
